Sustainable colours from bacteria
Sustainable coloured biomaterials can be created from structurally coloured bacteria.
Hoekmine BV is improving the process to isolate the colours found in bacterial strains to create low-cost colourants from bacteria.
These can be considered disruptive innovations for the dye industries. The colours are intense and non-bleaching and do not contain petroleum products or heavy metals. Current dye processes are inefficient, and waste water and energy, alongside creating pollution.
